Spring approached on tiptoe in April, but in May it has burst into a rainbow of color here in New England. A slow wander through my garden today reveals vivid green grass, a blue ocean of forget-me-nots, the intoxicating scent of purple lilac that breezes through open windows all day, and Monet inspired blue flag filling out the edges of the beds. Columbine, my favorite flower, planted for bees, butterflies and hummingbirds has reseeded itself everywhere! A misty morning invites me to sit on a bench and surround myself with the scent of rain-drenched soil, herbs, and air so fresh it is startling.
I spend 30 minutes every morning weeding maple and black cherry seedings, clover, bittercress and any other plant that has ended up in the wrong spot. The dogs search the yard for rabbits, and the mother birds feed their babies above me while I make progress against time! The herb garden, my favorite, is where I spend most of my time amongst the scents of lavender, basil, sage and motherwort, cultivating arugula, mustard and dill for our salads. Handfuls of gorgeous food carried into the house make meals extra flavorful and delicious.
Thunderstorms, a warm summery day ending with a cool evening breeze upon my face, tiny pink petals decorating my white sneaker toes, dinner on the porch, bumblebees gorging themselves on rhododendron nectar, these are my memories to carry forward into June and beyond.
Despite unpredictable weather, May is the threshold of summer. So much to look forward to this year: Renovations, day trips, reunions, quiet evenings reading on the porch, and watermelon! Our CSA has grown into a beloved weekly gathering of stellar organic goodness, so I’m looking forward to delightful dinners under the stars.
Every season has its uplifting qualities, and its dreaded ones too, but spring seems to have everything I love. Sunny days, fresh scents, cool evenings, and lots of flowers. It doesn’t get any better than this!
